Quick Sketches - Landscape Sketching Exercise [Video]
Sketches help us to quickly capture motifs or ideas. Here, we tend to draw quickly and with less detail. In this exercise, I will therefore introduce you to simple sketching techniques that you can use to create impressive sketches in no time at all. As an example, I’ll simply use a landscape sketch drawn with a simple pencil (B3 or B4). So let’s get started!
Introduction to quick sketches
For quick sketches, you tend to use simple geometries and lines to capture the subject. In this exercise, we will mainly work with simple sketch lines and hatching. Here we will use a few different hatchings to create dark and light areas. If you apply more pressure to the pencil, you will get darker lines. Less pressure creates lighter lines. We can also use the flat side of the pencil to create softer transitions. Here are some examples of the hatching used:

Quick sketch drawing guide
Draw a frame
1. Draw a frame at the beginning. We will create our sketch in this frame. Leave the bottom side open.
2. Now sketch the landscape in the frame and let the road protrude from the bottom of the frame.
Add details
1. Now add details to your sketch. You could start with a fence, for example.
2. Use simple strokes to detail your landscape. Sketch the house slightly in perspective.
Use hatching
1. You can use different hatching patterns to represent areas such as trees, bushes, roads or clouds.
2. Use the flat side of your pencil to draw the trees in the background.
3. Simply draw an outline for the row of trees and then hatch with a simple hatching.
4. Add more trees and hatch them. Also hatch the clouds, the meadow and the road. Add further details.
