3D Illusion Drawing - Hole in the Ground with Ladder [Video]
3D drawings are a great way to create the illusion of depth and space on a flat sheet of paper. Not only do they impress with their realistic representation, but they are also an excellent exercise to improve your drawing skills and deepen your understanding of perspective, depth and shading.
In this tutorial, I will show you step by step how to draw a simple 3D illusion of a ladder sticking out of a hole. Don’t worry, even if you are still a beginner, you will master this drawing with a little patience. All you need is a sheet of paper, a few basic drawing utensils and the willingness to try something new.
Required drawing tools
For this exercise, we use a mix of several drawing tools. Here’s a list for you:
– A sheet of paper
– Pencil (e.g. 3B or 4B)
– Eraser
– Black felt-tip pen
– Paper wiper or handkerchief

3D illusion drawing step by step guide
Draw the basic shape
1. First, we start with the hole from which the 3D illusion should protrude. Draw a rectangle for this.
2. Now draw the ladder sticking out of the hole. Start with two parallel lines.
3. To create a perspective effect, draw the lines so that they converge slightly at the bottom.
4. Then add the rungs of the ladder that run closer together towards the bottom.
5. Now also draw a shadow for the ladder to enhance the three-dimensional effect.
Draw contours with a felt-tip pen
1. Now draw the contours with a black felt-tip pen. This enhances the contrast of the drawing.
2. Redraw the contours of the ladder so that they are thicker. Draw the lines thinner towards the bottom.
Draw shadows with hatching
1. To give the drawing depth, we need shadows. Use a soft pencil (e.g. 4B).
2. Make sure to draw the hatching lines in the same direction as the lines of the rectangle.
3. Blend the shadows with a paper wiper or tissue to create softer transitions.
4. You can fill darker areas with hatching. Simple hatching would be recommended here.
5. Erase the lines that extend beyond the contours of the hole to make the drawing look cleaner.
6. Now also draw the shadow of the ladder thicker and let the stitches run downwards or to the sides.
7. Now blur the shadow of the ladder so that it looks even wider.
8. Your drawing is now finished and you can use it to take beautiful pictures.
Simply hold the camera at right angles to your drawing until the illusion of a three-dimensional hole is created.
